In what we believe to be a first for the global fast-food industry, Burger King Russia has reportedly created a virtual currency called the “Whoppercoin.”

The company has reportedly issued one billion of the tokens using the Waves blockchain platform. According to Fortune, the coin was launched alongside a new loyalty program: For every Whopper purchased, customers will receive one Whoppercoin. However, it’s unclear if the company will accept the digital tokens as payment.

Well that could be the beginning of the end of cryptocurrency. If they're handing them out like cheap plastic toys. Of course there are different types cryptocurrency but having some company give them out for free will give people the idea that these currencies can be made out of thin air and can be come so varied and plentiful as to be meaningless.

Cryptos is another form of Currecy. Is not Money like Gold is. However, both can be used. The same way when the Dollar was backed by Gold.

The only thing Gold and Cryptos have in common is Decentralization

That's unlikely. If anything, projects like that puts the NEW technology behind crytpocurrencies in hand of normal people, that are not deep into austrian economics or geeks. If anything, it popularices how to get into it.

Russia is even planning to fund a state promoted project to get up to the 30% of the hashing power of bitcoin mining, that from a point where they prosecuted bitcoin traders as criminals. Personaly, I think as Vitalkik Buterin (ethereum's head) is russian, they've been more willing to listen to him.

@Anacap I see your point. Whoppercoin could be the "gateway drug" to Bitcoin.

Seems there is no end in site to the multitude of currencies on the planet. As @Josh Crumb says, 160 measuring sticks but with crypto, there's over 900 according to wiki.
